Below are useful links (bold and underlined) to Wineries close to Hanmer Springs:
If you are staying in Hanmer Springs at Hanmer Apartments, there are lots of day trips you can take to taste (and buy) the region's best.
Waiau River Estate
Formerly Marble Point Winery, 2254 Mouse Point Road, SH7, Hanmer Springs 7334. This is the closest winery to Hanmer Springs (10 minutes by car) if you have limited time. Situated with a view across the Waiau River, their first grapes were planted in 2004, with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Tasting Room restaurant is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, cheese platters available & wine tasting from the Cellar Door 10am and 4pm.
Pegasus Bay
263 Stockgrove Rd, Waipara. Our favourite & maybe the best known winery in the Waipara region - for its wines as well as the restaurant, owned and operated by the very accomplished Donaldson family. All wines are made with estate grown fruit from the Waipara Valley vineyard, using traditional sustainable viticulture methods, low crop levels and minimal handling of fruit. The results are outstanding wines produced under the Pegasus Bay and Main Divide labels.
Wines include Sauvignon Semillon, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot Cabernet. For something extra special, there is also the Pegasus Bay Reserve collection.
The restaurant has received many awards year after year - being judged winner of the Casual Dining category at the Cuisine Good Food Awards and winery restaurant of the year.
Waipara Hills
Formerly Mud House Cafe and Winery, 780 Glasnevin Road (SH 1), Waipara, North Canterbury. Our second favourite. If you're driving to Hanmer Springs via the State Highway north of Christchurch, you will notice the striking Cafe and Winery building now owned by Waipara Hills wines on the right hand side of the road just before Waipara itself. This is a wonderful spot to not only stop to sample the vintages, but also for lunch, not over-priced but delicious!
Black Estate Winery
614 Omihi Road, Waipara Valley. Black Estate is a name that is becoming increasingly well known, not just in the Canterbury region but further afield.
The tasting room and eatery in Omihi Road are well worth a visit, with some of the best local produce on offer. Black Estate produces organic, biodynamic wines that make the most of the local soils and climate. They currently have three organic hillside vineyards planted in Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
Terrace Edge Wines,
328 Georges Road, Waipara. Terrace Edge is an organic vineyard and olive grove receiving rave reviews for its award winning Liquid Geography Riesling, along with the Syrah and Pinot Noir. They also grow Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc.
Since olives often thrive in the same conditions that help make great wine, this winery has branched out into growing olives - and very successfully! Terrace Edge Olive Oil has a herbaceous, grassy flavour with intense peppery charateristics and was awarded Canterbury's first ever Gold Medal, for the Terrace Edge Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Greystone Wines
376 Omihi Road, Waipara. Established in 2004 on the limestone and clay slopes of Waipara, all grapes are estate grown, vinified and bottled so that the Greystone team can ensure complete control in every aspect of the winegrowing process.
All the vineyards are certified sustainable and managed with an eye to ensuring great fruit across all blocks. The rolling slopes of Omihi allow them a mix of clay, limestone and greensands so each of the 9 separate blocks can express itself uniquely.
Mt Beautiful Wines
Two Rivers Gallery/Cafe and Tasting Room, Cheviot. Established in 2004, Mt Beautiful has 80 hectares of stunning wine country, producing award winning wines that are gaining international recognition. You can drop into the tasting room at the Two Rivers Gallery and Cafe in Cheviot (80 minutes by car) and sample their wines.
They are best known for the Mt Beautiful Riesling, along with their Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc.
